Looking for an activity that can be enjoyed by the whole family and also keep you fit? Stand-up paddleboarding or SUP is becoming increasingly popular. It offers a fun way to play on the water, with the added benefit of a full-body workout. And, since you stand at full height on your board, it gives you a unique vantage point for viewing what’s down under the water and out on the horizon.
Whether you are a complete beginner, new to SUPing or more experienced, it’s always useful to know a few tips and tricks to help improve your SUP experience. The best way to learn and enhance your time on the water is to have a lesson. You will learn the right techniques including tips to help you get back on the board and develop your skills and knowledge of how to understand the environment such as wind and tidal information.
Here are our expert tips on how to paddleboard and stay safe while you paddle on the beach of Olowalu!

Simple Tips to Improve Your Time in Stand Up Paddleboarding
WEAR A BUOYANCY AID
A buoyancy aid is a type of Personal Floatation Device (PFD) that will provide extra floatation in the water to help keep you afloat. The aid comes in different sizes and it is important that you have the correct size as this will help when getting back on to the board.
WEAR THE CORRECT LEASH
The leash will help you stay connected to your board if you get into trouble and help you float. It is important to keep in mind that choosing the correct leash is a MUST!
CARRY YOUR PHONE IN A WATERPROOF POUCH
Aside from taking pictures during your stand up paddleboarding in Olowalu, your mobile phone can also be use when you want to raise an alarm. Make sure you carry this on you so that you can get it easily if are in trouble.
AVOID OFFSHORE WINDS
Offshore winds are winds that are blowing from the beach or shore out to sea. Often with offshore winds the water looks idyllic and calm however this can be deceptive as offshore winds will quickly blow you and your paddleboard far out to sea, which can make it extremely tiring and difficult to paddle back to shore. If you are on a lifeguarded beach, keep an eye out for the orange windsock to see which way the wind is blowing.

Before you grab your board and head to the water for the first time, here are some simple tips for planning your SUP outing:
Look for a sandy beach you can wade into the water to easily launch your SUP.
Choose a sunny day with little to no wind.
Go with a friend so you can keep an eye on each other.
Plan to paddle for about one hour on your first outing.
